Movement Workshop w/ Kristi Faulkner

  • Andy Art Center 3000 Fenkell Avenue Detroit, MI, 48238 United States (map)

[ ABOUT THE CLASS ]

Participants will ease into the class with a series of Bartenieff-based exercises designed to connect basic body patterns with breath and intention. We will pick up speed and intensity though guided improvisation that expands on these ideas, followed by earthbound phrases that develop a deep connection with the floor and investigate multiple points of contact to achieve efficiency and freedom. This class is designed for intermediate/advanced movers.

[ ABOUT THE TEACHER ]

Kristi Faulkner is a queer-identified performing artist committed to discovering how bodies can serve as agents of social and political change. As Artistic Director of Kristi Faulkner Dance, she strives for authenticity by shedding the artifice of technically-focused performance to show what makes us human in ways that are relatable, humorous, and sometimes uncomfortable. Her work has been presented and commissioned throughout Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Kentucky, and New York. She is a 2016 & 2018 Maggie Allesee Choreography Award finalist and a Knight Arts Challenge recipient for Not In My House - a collaboration with the Ruth Ellis Center to engage and inspire LGBTQ youth through performance and storytelling. She holds an MFA in choreography and performance from The College at Brockport, SUNY.
