CSD Artist in Residence Showing & Class

  • Marygrove Campus 8425 W McNichols Rd Detroit, Michigan (map)

Join us for the concluding showing, discussion, and class with our artist in residence, Monica Brady-Barnard of Among Women.
The event will begin with a showing of Monica's newest untitled solo work, followed by a brief Q&A to allow for audience feedback to help the artist continue in her movement exploration. Class will immediately follow where movers are invited into the space to create rapid choreography in solos or groups. Dancers will learn techniques used for the piece created during this residency. Speed, memory, and imagination are all tools to help break from normal movement patterns. Hopefully, feeling freedom within the choreographic structures given.

[ ABOUT MONICA BRADY-BARNARD ]
Monica Brady-Barnard is a movement artist based in Detroit. She has been choreographing work since 2010 after the birth of her first child. Four kids later, she continues to find inspiration in her personal experience of motherhood and the exploration of what it means to be female. Her company, Among Women, gives space for people to move and create together, creating a common movement vocabulary, in order to better understand each others unique life experiences. Her classes focus on choreographic techniques that allow movement artists to explore their own style within phrase work and improvisation. These allowances make for a collaborative environment in which all dancers hold ownership in the creative process.
